of such organisations identify community cohesion as their top priority.

In the wake of the 2024 Summer Riots, Sporting Equals highlights the pivotal yet overlooked role of faith-based grassroots sports organisations in maintaining community cohesion. As political tensions and online disinformation fuelled unrest, these local groups—ranging from Gurdwaras and Mosques to multi-faith cycling clubs—stepped up as trusted spaces for safety, support, and dialogue. They provided crisis relief including food, shelter, and mental health aid, becoming essential pillars during a time of chaos.

Sporting Equals’ latest Policy Brief reveals that 77% of such organisations identify community cohesion as their top priority. Despite their proven impact, these groups remain underfunded and absent from key national integration strategies. The brief advocates for a shift in policy, urging stakeholders to move beyond reactive policing toward long-term, trauma-informed approaches that harness the power of local sport.

Key recommendations include increased funding for sport providers in high-tension areas, collaborative strategy development with local councils, and training for coaches in trauma and hate crime awareness. By embedding sport into national cohesion efforts, the report argues, we can counter division with unity and resilience.

Sporting Equals calls on members and leaders to reach out, engage, and invest in community sport as a vital force for inclusion, healing, and social strength.
